The rights of indigenous harvesters can be a flashpoint for many conversations across Canada, often loaded with assumptions and a long history of identity politics.  We undertake a less explored conversation of what happens when First Nations reclaim stewardship and responsibility of their historical lands through an international concept known as Indigenous Guardians Programs. 

 

Jeffrey Fabian (Eyes Unclouded) was the coordinator for the Indigenous Guardians Program out of Hay River, NWT (Katl'odeeche First Nation)  Jeff was instrumental in the program from top to bottom for years, including inception and design, all the way to uniform selection.  Chase and Tristan get the opportunity to explore First Nation approaches to conservation and what it means to take a truly holistic approach to ecosystem/human relationships.  Jeff also relays how each program is unique and chats about the future of these programs in Canada.  We close on a story about being "lost" on Great Slave Lake.

Josef Hamr is a retired biology professor from Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario. Josef has a rich history of working with large mammals internationally throughout his career. Paul McCarney has a Ph.D. in Environmental Studies. He researched social and ecological dimensions of wildlife research and management in the Arctic. Paul has a respectable resume of experience, not only in the academic world but also the outdoor world. Although Paul's journey didn't lead him into hunting until his adult years, it has become a central focus of many conversations in his life. On this episode we dive into discussions about defining trophy hunting, leading a productive dialogue while finding common ground in the conservation world and much more.

Dave Salmoni is known for his film work on big cats and conservation. His work can be found almost anywhere but his main platforms are Animal Planet and Discovery. On this episode Dave focuses on how all conservationists, hunters and non-hunters, can still find a way to work together for a common goal, as well as how cancel culture is bad for conservation, an honest look into trophy hunting in Africa, and what conservation methods look like in Africa. Matt Hendricks is a retired professional hockey player who spent 16 years in the NHL. Matt speaks about his passion for the outdoors and how that begun at a young age, his lesser known dream of becoming a biologist, his adventures archery hunting, finding fishing locations away from home and how finding time to spend outdoors made him a better hockey player and a better teammate.  

Frank Baldwin is a wildlife biologist for the Canadian Wildlife Service. His focus is migratory game birds. Previously Frank was employed by the Manitoba provincial government and worked additionally on other game bird species including wild turkeys. Frank discusses the changes in the upcoming spring conservation canada goose season and how the season is created. We also chat about the introduction of wild turkeys into Manitoba and how they have been managed for success.

Jim Fisher is the Senior Director of Canadian Conservation & Hunting Policy for Delta Waterfowl. On this episode Jim talks about waterfowl conservation, conserving wetlands and duck nesting habitat, working with farmers, staging areas, adapting to covid 19, funding projects, hunter recruitment and the rich history around Delta.
